Síminn enters into an agreement on a third submarine cable

Síminn has entered into an agreement with Greenland Connect regarding a capacity lease to Canada. Síminn is the only Icelandic telecommunications company which has concluded agreements on three submarine cables to and from Iceland. This represents a fivefold increase in bandwidth capacity to North-America, thereby increasing security and improving customer service.

Síminn is the first telecom operator to reach an agreement for bandwidth on Greenland Connect; the cable was laid in March and as yet has relatively little traffic.  Transmitting data over the cable will result in faster downloads from North America as the data does not need to go through Europe first as in the case of Farice or Cantat-3. Síminn’s customers will get better response times when communicating with North America and will be able to experience sites such as YouTube and Google in the highest quality possible. In addition, the agreement will allow Síminn to improve its service to companies that operate or do large volumes of business in North-America.  Last but not least, customers will be more secure as Síminn can choose to transmit data over two alternative cables if one goes down due to a malfunction.

Brian Buus Pedersen, CEO of Tele Greenland: “We are very pleased that our first agreement with a telecom operator for services on the new submarine cable, Greenland Connect, is made with Síminn, a leading company in the area of telecommunications in Iceland. I am certain that Síminn’s customers will see a higher bandwidth capacity to and from North-America than they have ever experienced before.”

Sævar Freyr Thráinsson, CEO of Síminn: “We are delighted to be able to offer Icelanders this added security as we believe that Síminn plays an important security role.  This is a brand new submarine cable which was installed considerably later than Farice and Cantat and therefore has all the latest technological features. It is also anticipated that its capacity can be increased in the future. This cable opens up a number of exciting opportunities for Síminn going forward. “
