Siminn strengthens GSM connections in 40 places

Siminn has greatly strengthened its customers' GSM connections by setting up over 40 new transmitters since the beginning of the year. Siminn has recently improved the GSM system in West Iceland, among other things, by relocating transmitters in Bifröst to beef up the connection there, and new transmitters were installed in Akranes. In Stykkishólmur the GSM connection has also been improved; in addition, further improvements to the connection are being made. The plan is to increase the number of transmitters there, which should make the GSM connection in Stykkishólmur very good.

Siminn has set up transmitters in the capital city area in many places to make the GSM connections denser and better, for example, in Seljahverfi, Grafarvogur and Vallahverfi in Hafnarfjordur. In addition, GSM connections have been improved in Úthlíd, Bláskógabyggd, Selfoss, Lake Thingvallavatn, Grímsnes and Kröfluvirkjun Power Station. In Sudurnes the connection has been improved near the Leifur Eiríksson Air Terminal in Keflavík.

During the year the build-up of GSM services in Jökuldalur was finished. This involved nearly 60 km of an approximately 400 km length of the Ring Road that has not had GSM connection until now. There is widespread satisfaction with these improvements.

One of Siminn's main strengths is a reliable distribution system reaching 98% of Icelanders. Where the GSM system does not reach, the NMT mobile phone system takes over. GSM system build-up is steady, and its coverage is always being made denser and better. It is worth mentioning that Siminn's GPRS system also reaches 98% of Icelanders. During the year Siminn has endeavoured to expand stations in rural areas where various events are held, in order to meet temporarily increased traffic.
