Siminn is the first Iceland telecommunications company to offer its customers access to a telecommunications network utilizing WiMAX technology. This is a wireless network suitable for broadband Internet connections. This service is already being operated experimentally for the summer cottage area in Grímsnes. This entails a long-range system that is very suitable where there is neither a fibre optic cable nor ADSL connections. This technology makes it possible to provide users with the best environment, high speed connections and high capacity continuous connection to the Internet.
WiMAX is very suitable for data transport, and, in addition to the Internet, corporate intranets can be connected, using this technology. Network connections like this noticeably improve the life quality in Iceland's far-flung rural areas and facilitates telecommuting and distance learning or relaxation and informative reading on the Internet. Siminn has organized experiments with WiMAX networks, both in Grímsnes and Thingeyjar-district. The experiments have been so successful that, in the next several months, these powerful network connections will be offered to Siminn's customers in Grímsnes.
This new technology can be used for voice telephones, and in the United States this has been done for mobile telephone conversations. This system offers the possibility of reserving part of the bandwidth for telephone conversations, so network traffic and downloading of data will have no effect on the quality of telephone conversations.
